Major efforts have been made by public authorities and human rights organizations to uncover and bring attention to rights abuse during military regimes in Latin America, and I intend to present the case of a Wikipedia initiative to create entries on political victims and disappeared detainees during the Brazilian dictatorship (1964-1985). I teach Political Science at the Department of Journalism at the Faculdade Cásper Líbero, in São Paulo, Brazil, and I asked my 162 students as their Spring-2014 assignment to do a sequence of Wikipedia activities mostly related to the Brazilian dictatorship. Firstly, they reviewed dozens of entries related to the 1964-1985 period. Secondly, they contributed to other WMF projects, not necessarily related to the dictatorship. These first steps were meant as an introduction to editing on Wikipedia and related projects. Lastly, each of the student was randomly assigned a Brazilian political victim or disappeared detainee and were responsible to write the entry of this person. I intend to mostly focus on this last step of the sequence of activities my students did if I have the opportunity to present at the 2015 Wikimania. This initiative had the support of the Brazilian National Truth Commission, a state-funded organization that has investigated human rights violations in Brazil, which granted access to hundreds of reports they produced. These documents were the main source from which students gathered information to write their entries. When the initiative was launched less than 10 entries of political victims and disappeared detainees in Brazil existed --most blue links on this full list of acknowledged political killings and forced disappearances in Brazil were made by my students. On the one hand, this initiative remains a successful case of using Wikipedia and sister projects for educational purposes --and I intend to present details of how this was designed and accomplished--; on the other hand, the case I hope to present in the 2015 Wikimania brings up the possibilities of relying on Wikipedia to convey knowledge that is established and recognized but should be more widely known.
