The world of open data is reshaping the ways in which we create, share, and and use information. Everyday, user-fueled resources such as Wikimedia, Open Street Map, and many other free and public means of sharing information are creating a parallel to the world of privatized public data. Like never before, communities of people are pushing to create a paradigm of freely shared information that can potentially re-frame the directions of how everything from mass collection of personal information, to global economic flows, and even how a city operates are influenced by the decisions of the information and 'maker' communities that seek to put the power and potentials of information center stage in the public eye for use and constructive collaboration by the masses. In this rapidly evolving new information paradigm, the most crucial piece of the puzzle is developing collaborative strategies and tools about how we use and distribute the information available; How information can be used, and more importantly, how do we continue to create the tools that make data and information more accessible and usable for larger groups of people?

CartoDB is built on an open source platform that seeks to build on these questions in imaginative and revolutionary ways that push not just inventive ways of using information, but simultaneously strive to create an easily accessible platform for visualizing spatial and social information in new and exciting ways. It is innovations in technology, such as CartoDB, that have the potential to bring open source data, information use innovation, and exciting collaborations onto the mainstream stage. CartoDB is a cloud-based GIS platform that easily and intuitively allows anybody to create striking visuals using any spatial data. With CartoDB stories can be told, information shared, and virtually any piece of information, both spatial and non-spatial, can be shared beautifully in the blink of an eye. This innovative use of data brings forward new possibilities for discussing how we engage with and rethink data accessibility and application of information. How do we continue to build the tools that make information more accessible? How do we make information not only accessible, but practical for use by various groups of people? How do we collaborate and build the tools needed to achieve these goals? These are all question that must be discussed by the information community in order to bring open source projects, open source data, and free information into the larger discourse.
