- The use of Open Educational Resources (OER) has been encouraging and promoting greater use of digital materials movement that are offered freely, openly for educators, students and self-learners. This study describes the use of Wikibooks in course development and course delivery for Open Distance Learning (ODL) environment span from 2013-2015. In the course development phases, the course development team members uses three main development phases namely creation, evaluation and production with the integration of Wikibooks in developing self-guided content, assessments and activities for distance learning environment. The OER courses include programming courses e.g. Java Programming (Wikibooks integration) to cater for lifelong learners and the development of OER courses includes the involvement from multiple stakeholders headed by a course development team comprises of course coordinators, course specialists, instructional designers and experienced instructors. Webinars and feedback sessions were conducted for OER repositories identification, understanding Creative Commons licensing and instructional designs during the development phases for searching, creating and integration of learning content. The OER course delivery has been further been tested during the course delivery among the ODL undergraduate students. The course delivery focuses on primary aspects such as OER online facilitation, OER discussion (Wikibooks) and collective feedback sessions in promoting the use of OER in ODL undergraduate studies. Participation rates of different topic-specific resources (OERs) were identified and performance evaluation on summative assessments, formative assessment and learning components were carried out at the end of each semesters. The study proposed an approach to promote knowledge-sharing through the use of Wikibooks in higher education and explore motivating factors to encourage participation in contributing as a Wikibookians. This study also aim to increase and widen the participation in accessing OER materials to empower the student’s learning and promote the growth of Wikibooks.
