This presentation is based on experience from introducing open badges into the Education program in Sweden in 2014 and the developments since then. It focuses on badges earned by educators and students, although issuing badges has promise for various kinds of voluntary engagements outside of educational settings. Open Badges is an open, non-proprietary Mozilla initiated, standard for creating mini-credentials to validate learning experiences and skills. I would like to discuss how badges connect to both motivation and comprehension, and what the technical challenges are right now.
Motivation: Recognition of skills is a motivator
Badges are a promising way of accrediting educators, acknowledging their skills and achievements, and breaking down a fairly extensive pedagogical process into manageable milestones and specific tasks. They also give educators the freedom to design assignments and assessments according to their syllabi and students. The educator has the pedagogical knowledge to bring their curriculum and Wikipedia together, and that is key to successfully integrating education with Wikipedia editing.
Comprehension: Removig barrriers for success
Visual representations of key tasks will help teachers better understand what designing Wikipedia assignments for students is all about. This is an important aspect of using badges, since presenting educators with very dense information about how they can implement learning with Wikipedia, however accurate, can be a barrier to success. Displaying the individual badges in a systematic design offers a comprehensive overview of the process. Students are introduced to the process with focus on how Wikipedia standards relate to skills and achievements, when these are captured by a visual badge system.
