Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)

QRpedia is a community developed project using QR codes to link to Wikipedia articles. Its code is open source and the deployment has been donated to, and is now run by, Wikimedia UK. The project's unique feature is that it detects the language setting of the device used to scan the code, and where possible, delivers a Wikipedia article in that language. This allows host institutions (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAMs) and others) to deliver a service to visitors who do not speak the local language(s), which they may not otherwise be able to afford to do. The presentation will include a brief overview of QRpedia for people new to it, with case studies from the United Kingdom, USA, Germany and elsewhere, and then concentrate on recent changes, developments and new/ planned deployments, including implications of the move to WMUK management, followed by a discussion of potential improvements and the requirements of the institutions using the codes. A number of questions will be posed: what should happen when the requested article is not available in the specified language? How can we make life easier for people deploying the system at their venue? What can we automate? How can we encourage more venues to do so? Other than in GLAMs, what inventive locations can we use QRpedia at? What statistics should be returned, and in what formats? How can we differentiate between visits from users at different venues, but looking at the same article? How can we use QRpedia to convert readers into editors, or translators? How can we encourage volunteers to translate articles which may be perceived as only being of local interest, into those of likely visitors? What are the potential benefits for minority ethnic, and migrant, communities and how do we involve them? The audience will be invited to contribute to forming solutions.
