Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)

New types of mobile devices and new ways of interacting with content online are changing the way people learn from and participate in knowledge communities. This opens up the opportunity to re-imagine the process of creating, shaping, and learning from Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

The mobile features teams at the Wikimedia Foundation have started to explore this uncharted territory on the mobile web and in native apps, with the goal of identifying and scaling project that allow millions of mobile users to get more value from our immense repositories of free knowledge, and to add value just as quickly and easily. This presentation will showcase how we are thinking about this goal and the specific features we're building and testing in each of the areas below:

  • Create: engaging a broader audience with simple, lightweight contributions that don't require text input. Can we provide a meaningful (and fun) contribution tool to users who are not interested in editing on a small screen?
  • Shape: creating tools that allow users to more easily collect, curate, remix, and share content with friends. Will a more hands-on, personalized reading experience help readers discover more of what Wikimedia projects have to offer and share that knowledge with the world?
  • Learn: building new ways of visualizing knowledge and surfacing relevant and related content for a richer reading experience. How can we adapt the long-form article reading experience to the quicker bite-sized, just-in-time learning that mobile users need?

This presentation will also touch on how the mission of the Wikimedia movement is being impacted by today's rapidly changing, innovative, mobile-driven technological landscape – how things like aggregated and structured data, gamefied crowd-sourcing, machine translation, the shift from browser to app and search to social discovery all present both opportunities and unique challenges to the way our communities have created and shared knowledge in the past... and where we could go in the future.
